The history of the Madlener family in Damüls.

How it all began.

  3. Host & History

The Madlener family and tradition are inseparable.

Ingo Madlener has always been a pioneer, literally making it from apprentice chef to well-known hotelier and enthusiastic host at Hotel Mittagspitze. But one thing at a time. Because most stories have more than one beginning. The story of the Damülser Mittagspitze begins over 700 years ago with the Walser people, and around 60 years ago with Anton Madlener, who built the traditional Mittagspitze inn on the site of a former horse stable and watering trough. And last but not least, it all began in 1997, when Ingo Madlener gradually developed the Mittagspitze into today's lifestyle and boutique hotel Die Mittagspitze over almost 30 years with a great deal of dedication and passion.

The Boutique Hotel Die Mittagspitze today.

Since 1997, the hotel has been in the capable hands of Ingo Madlener, who has continued the family tradition, invested heavily and created extensions and conversions, realized new visions until it became the newly renovated wellness hotel of the highest standard that you find today.

There are many reasons to be a guest at Boutique Hotel Die Mittagspitze: the magnificent and unobstructed panoramic view of the popular Mittagspitze, the direct connection to the Damüls-Mellau ski area in winter, or the ideal starting point for excursions and tours in summer are just a few of them ...

The settlement
of the Uga Alpe

In the late Middle Ages, many Swiss farmers were forced to abandon their homes in the canton of Valais due to great poverty. They roamed the countryside in search of new areas to farm. They finally found what they were looking for on the Alpe Uga, above Damüls, and settled down: the era of the Walser in Vorarlberg began around 1300. Damüls was first mentioned in a document in a feudal charter of the Count of Montfort in 1313. At that time, the Alpe belonged to free farmers who were supposed to prove their loyalty to the Count in battle if necessary.

Outstanding natural jewel:
Mittagspitze

The Mittagspitze in Damüls rises 2,095 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in the Damüls municipality and also the northern ridge of the Damüls mountains. Originally, the striking elevation was called "Trista" as the summit resembles a Triste, a cone-shaped haystack. Both names are common among the locals. There was most likely a small church at the foot of the Mittagspitze as early as the time of settlement of the Walser people. Today, the village center is located there with the historic parish church built around 1484 and the Alpenhotel Die Mittagspitze, which was built in the 1950s.

From horse stable to
4-star superior establishment

Today's 4-star superior Alpenhotel Die Mittagspitze was built in 1954 by Anton Madlener as an inn on the foundations of the parish church of St. Nikolaus. Today, the family business is flourishing in the capable hands of his nephew, Ingo Madlener. It's hard to imagine that there used to be a horse stable with drinking trough and the village well here.

The beginnings of
Damüls tourism.

Initially burdened with a few difficulties, the idea of hospitality developed quickly and positively: "tourism" flourished and guests from all over the world were welcomed to Damüls with joy. Things went so well that a large extension was due in 1970, which finally elevated the establishment to the 4-star superior category.
